Exploring the towering heights of Mount Kilimanjaro is a thrilling adventure that sparks numerous questions for prospective trekkers. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Kilimanjaro cover a broad spectrum of topics crucial for a successful climb. From inquiries about the best time to climb and route options to concerns about altitude sickness and necessary gear, these FAQs serve as an invaluable resource for those preparing for the ascent. Aspiring climbers often seek information about the diverse flora and fauna on the mountain, accommodation options during the trek, and the level of physical fitness required. Understanding these FAQs provides trekkers with essential insights, ensuring they are well-prepared, mentally and physically, for the challenges and wonders that await them on the majestic slopes of Kilimanjaro. Whether it’s about permits, weather conditions, or cultural considerations, having a comprehensive understanding of the frequently asked questions ensures climbers embarking on their Kilimanjaro expedition armed with the knowledge needed for a safe and rewarding journey.

How much time do I need to climb Mount Kilimanjaro?

We recommend a minimum of eight days from the USA and Europe, although some people may wish more time for the trip. We can customize itineraries or routes to offer more days in the park(s). Some people may wish to climb nearby Mount Meru as well. If you have more than eight or nine days, you can choose any of the main routes on the mountain and still have time for a wildlife safari before or after your trip.

What is the best time of year to climb Mount Kilimanjaro?

You can climb any month of the year. At lower elevations, April, May, and November are quite wet while March and June are transitional months. August and September are the coldest and driest months. January, February, July, August, and September are all popular climbing months.

Why do we make the final ascent in the pre-dawn darkness?

Most groups will start for the summit on ascent day around 11 PM to midnight, depending on the perceived fitness of the group, the weather and the route. The pre-dawn hours are ideal to start the ascent to the summit as it is cold but also calm and clear. It is rare find cloudy weather at the summit at dawn any time of year and at dawn, you have the best view. On the other hand, if you leave in early morning, it could be very windy and the ascent becomes more difficult. The ascent day is a long hiking day, so it is better start early and walk slowly. It can take up to 15 hours to reach the summit and descend to the camp for that night.

How much weight will I have to wear and where can I leave unnecessary luggage?

You will simply carry a day pack of about two to four kilograms, although some people carry more or less. Your gear (not to exceed twelve kilograms) will be placed inside a waterproof duffle at the trail head and a porter will carry this for you. If you have things that you do not need on the climb, you may leave a bag behind at Arusha.

What kind of staff will accompany me on the climb?

The usual ratio is three or four local staff for each climber, although small groups may have four or five staff per climber. The staff usually consists of an English speaking guide or guides, a professional cooker, and gear-carrying porters. We encourage you to interact with your staff. They are all trustworthy, local people who have grown up in the shadow of the mountain. Many of them have climbed the peak a hundred or more times.

What is provided and what do I have to bring?

We provide tents, camping gear, food, utensils, and leadership. You should bring your own sleeping bag, water system, personal clothing, light duffle bag, and day pack. Hiking poles can be rented. A packing list is provided to all climbers, along with our pre-departure packet: • 1 mountaineering sleeping bag (usually a below 10 degree rating or better is recommended) • 2-3 liters’ water canteen (sturdy plastic or steel) • 1 LED flashlight with spare batteries • 1 Pair of comfortable trekking boots • 1 towel • 2 pairs of thick thermal socks and several pairs of regular socks • 2 fleece jackets • 1 down jacket or long-sleeved wind-breaker (down jacket is unnecessary if you have good fleece jackets) • 1 set of thermal underwear (i.e. thermal vest and long-johns) • 2 pairs of trekking trousers • 1 waterproof jacket • 1 pair of waterproof trousers • 1 balaclava or ski-mask • 1 sun hat • 1 pair of sunglasses

What kind of tents will I sleep in? What are the huts on the Marangu Route like?

Your tents are mountain-style, double-walled, mosquito-netted, and durably-floored with waterproof material. While technically rated as three-person tents, they accommodate two people very comfortably. Tents are erected and packed up by the portering staff. There is enough space for tall people to stretch out and room for your gear within the tent. On the Marangu Route, the huts are just large enough for four bunks built against the walls of A-frame cubicles. Tall hikers will feel cramped. Gear is stored on the floor. Wash and toilet facilities are shared and are outside of the bungalows.

What is the food like?

Breakfast includes tea, coffee, milk, eggs, toast, porridge, cereals, bread, fruits, bacon, sausages, etc. Lunch is a picnic lunch on the way the first day while it is hot lunch the next days with hot soups, bread, vegetables, fruits, salad, cookies, beef, chicken or fish, potatoes, pasta, or rice with sauce. Dinner starts with hot soups, followed by the main course (pasta or rice, meat), desserts and ends with hot drinks.

What happens if some members of the party need to turn back before the summit?

No one is forced to go on. There is always enough staff to split the group accordingly to needs and regroup later at the camp. Most people have no trouble reaching the highest campsite. If some party members decide not to climb the final distance to the peak or cannot proceed at any point in time, they can wait for the other group climbers to come back or can go down with a guide following the same way or take a lateral path to the descent route.

What What are the healthy issues on Mount Kilimanjaro?if some members of the party need to turn back before the summit?

You must arrive healthy and fit. A simple cold or other respiratory sickness can become worse during the trekking. There is no malaria risk on the mountain and insect bites are very rare.

What kind of help is available in case of an emergency?

We always have a first aid kit with us and guides are well trained on first aid. Serious injuries are very rate and Kilimanjaro National Park has a rescue team in case of emergency.

Is bottled oxygen necessary or available on the climb?

Bottled oxygen is not routinely available on this climb and not included in the price of the trip. The most immediate treatment for serious altitude sickness is rapid descent, which is always possible on Mount Kilimanjaro. Virtually no climbers on the mountain carry oxygen. If upon reaching the final campsite before the ascent your guide judges you to have serious symptoms of altitude sickness, you will not be permitted to attempt the final climb. Oxygen may be available on an emergency basis or at an added cost, but not as an aid for climbers who have not acclimatized adequately on their own.

Do I need to get any vaccinations before I leave?

Check with your doctor and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) for current recommendations. None are required for entry to Tanzania from the USA and Europe or for re-entry to the USA and Europe. If you come from a yellow fever endemic country by road, proof of vaccination is required.

Unforgettable and wonderful safari experience in North Tanzania With my girlfriend we experienced a wonderful private safari for 6 days in the north part of Tanzania. The organisation was very good and Ibrahim was pretty quick to adjust our plans, to communicate and to give special recommendations. Our personal guide Haji demonstrated a lot of experience, patience and teaching skills. He always was looking for the best scenes to spot while respecting the nature. We felt very comfortable with him. The big 5 were nice to see, but they are not the core of the safari. Every day we experienced new unique habitats and unexpected events that surprised us. The several birds species that we spotted with pretty patience, were the ice on the cake. The accommodations and service were excellent for all the trip, especially in the Serengeti National Park. Finally this nature and cultural experience will be always unforgettable and it has been above our best expectations. Afrishare safari operator is defenitely recommended.

Safari and Sansibar We traveled in September for a 10-day Safari tour and Sansibar with Afrishare. Our experience was the greatest! The communication with Ibrahim was very easy, supportive and quick. He answers immedietely to any questions regardless what time it is. Ibrahim was helpful in making a new travel plan adapted to our needs and wishes. We were very happy with our acommodation and felt always secure. Our tourguides were great and we developed a beauatiful releationship to them. In Tansania we spent 10 beautiful day with Moses, who is really the best we could ever ask for. He was very kind, friendly, communicative, motivated to share his knowledge and describe things and he contributed to see the BIG FIVE. Actually he found the most beautiful spots to enjoy the wildness. He knew the locations around and was always informed about the planned schedule, additionally he was very flexible to new ideas and motivated to show us the real tansanian way of life. Overall we were very happy and lucky to do this exotic trip with Afrishare, and recommend it heartwarmly. Asante sana for this beautiful expirience!

Amazing 4 day Safari We had an amazing 4 day/3 night Safari tour with Afrishare. Ibrahim was highly responsive and supportive to all our questions and special request during the planning and coordination, which was quite last minute. Everything was planned (including multiple last minute multiple changes) perfectly according to our requests. Okuli our tourguide was amazing! From the very beginning, he picked us up on time, waiting for us outside the airport. During the tour he was extremely helpful, accomodating, friendly and communicative and was very knowledgable and had answers to all our questions. He always went out of his way to give us the best experiences and sightings and accomodated our needs. He always would inquire about our preferences for the itiniary and timeschedule and we were always well informed of the agenda. He was very well planned each day and punctual and always gave us the option to decide what we wanted to see and when we wanted to stop for breaks. He had impressive driving skills and navigating around in the parks went smoothly. He knew his way around very well and always knew the drive durations which made the time planning very smooth, according to plan, and very relaxed. Even for the last day he was extremely helpful and flexible to change the initial plan for the day on the evening before. On the last day he picked us up well on time and delivered us safely to the airport. Overall an amazing trip and Okuli was the best!

Amazing Kili Hike and Serengeti safari We had an amazing holiday with Afrishare - a combination of a 7 day Kilimajaro hike for myself and my 16 year old son, and then a 4 day safari in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro crater for the whole family after my wife and other son had flown out to join us. In all of it Afrishare organised everything perfectly, from the fundamentals of the hike and the safari through to all the interconnecting transfers. We made the decision to go with a local Tanzanian company rather than some big international tour operator, and do not regret that decision at all. Right from day one, Ibrahim and team were very responsive (do they ever sleep?!) answering my endless questions and tweaking the itinerary so it was exactly as we wanted. They then delivered. The Kili hike was the 7 day Machame route. The team taking us up were great, had all the required kit, and looked after us well. It was hard going but we made it to the summit and have amazing memories and sense of achievement. The safari in the Serengeti was amazing - we saw the big 5, including 46 lions in 2-3 days, and a cheetah and cubs a few metres away. Through it all our guide Kazi, was fantastic - really knowledgeable about the animals and conservation more widely, also good fun (which is important when you have 4 full days together!). I would definitely recommend Afrishare.

Very happy with our safari experience and our guide Fredy! I found Afrishare on SafariBookings.com and it had a lot of good reviews so I decided to contact them via email since there were so many safari options to choose from. Ibrahim answered really fast and was very welcoming. At first I didn't know how many days we (me and my boyfriend) should book and which parks to visit but Ibrahim helped us a lot. We decided to go to Tarangire and Ngorongoro for 2-day private safari trip. We arrived to Arusha one day before and contacted our driver to give directions for pickup. Our guide Fredy arrived on time and was super nice. On the way to Tarangire Fredy informed us about everything we should know beforehand. We were a little worried how many (if any) animals we would see but Fredy calmed us down. A few minutes into exploring Tarangire we already encountered some zebras and impalas! Fredy told us interesting facts about every animal we saw. At the end of the day we had already seen elephants, giraffes, lions, a leopard(!!) and many others. We stayed the night at Ngare Lodge. It was very peaceful and nice. The second day started super early. Fredy told us that we should arrive early at Ngorongoro for best safari experience. And he was right! It took some time to drive up the rim and then into the crater but waking up at 5 am was totally worth it! He navigated the crater like a pro and knew exactly where the animals would be at that time of the day. After 2 days of safari we saw all Big5 and many more. After lunch we headed back and visited some local souvenir places. Fredy dropped us off at our hotel in Arusha. It was a short trip but totally worth the price! Thank you again, Fredy!

MOSES is GOD Our first time safari experience with afrishare was fabulous. We were 4 and had 5 days safari tour including Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongo. It was such a great time that we couldn’t forget for the rest of our lives! Ibrahim was communicative responded quickly to our requests. Actually that was the main reason why we chose afrishare. Plus, all accommodation reservations were secure and the administrative procedures during the trip went smoothly. And I can’t forget to mention MOSES!! This guy was REALLY an expert. He was very supportive to make us to have the most comfortable time possible, and communicated with the other guides in every way to ensure that we didn't miss a single animal, while allocating the time efficiently. I think his long time experience in arranging the safari helped us to make all the schedule effective. His sense humor and good personality also made our trip enjoyable. I’d like to wrap up this short post with some pics. Thanks again to afrishare & MOSES the GOD!!! We really appreciate all of your effort during the trip. MOSES is afrishare. MOSES is Tanzania!!! ????????????

Everything we wanted and more! Our safari with Afrishare was nothing short of spectacular. I have done safaris in six other countries previously, and this one quickly rose to the top of my list. From customizing our itinerary to the bargain pricing, it was easy to choose. But we got so much out of it than we bargained for - comfortable accommodations, a top-notch guide (Rama!), and tons of animals (big 5 plus others). This was the first time for my sister and nephew to go on safari and I wanted to make sure they had the best experience possible - Afrishare delivered more than I could have asked for. So grateful for the kind, dedicated and professional staff at Afrishare for making it happen. Highly recommend booking with Afrishare for an exquisite experience. Thank you so much!
