WHY JOIN A GROUP ON KILIMANJARO?

The advantage of joining a group on Kilimanjaro climb is that you may choose any group or date that suits your schedule. We arrange the climbs each and every day of the year for groups of any size, on any route; both private and open climbs. All groups are guaranteed to depart regardless of the number of participants. Your trip will never be canceled, and you will never be asked to pay more, even if you are the only person booked on the climb.

We climb Mount Kilimanjaro every day of the year and can schedule a climb with just 2 days’ notice for any booking group size. However, many climbers – particularly those traveling solo – prefer to join others who have already booked.

How to Choose Your Kilimanjaro Group

Selecting your preferred Kilimanjaro group climb is a breeze. We offer scheduled group departures throughout the year on a variety of routes, each with their own unique dates and features. To specify which climb suits you best, simply review our list of upcoming group expeditions and pick the group that matches your travel dates, desired route (like Machame, Lemosho, or Northern Circuit), and any special interests—such as Women Only Groups, Full Moon climbs, or holiday departures.

If you already have specific dates or a route in mind, just let us know when booking. Many of our trips are themed or timed to coincide with special events, such as International Women’s Day or the New Year, so you can easily align your adventure with an occasion that inspires you.

Not sure which departure to choose? Get in touch with your preferences—duration, route, travel timeframe, or special interests—and we’ll help you find the perfect group to join.

Rest assured, with expeditions leaving almost every week, there’s a great fit for every climber. Review the available options and reserve your spot on the group that’s right for you.

Want to Set Your Own Climb Date?

If you have a specific date in mind and would like others to join your expedition, we’re happy to make that happen. Simply let us know your preferred schedule, and we’ll create a new group for your chosen date—then publish it on our Kilimanjaro group join page to invite fellow climbers to join. To confirm your booking and get the group started, a non-refundable lifetime deposit of $300 USD per person is required.

Additional Services and Pricing

When planning your Kilimanjaro adventure, you may want to customize your trip with a few extra comforts or support. Below are some of the optional services you can add, along with their associated costs:

  • Single supplement: If you prefer the privacy of your own tent or hotel room, a single supplement is available for an additional $250 per trip.
  • Extra day on the mountain: Need a little more time to acclimatize or to savor the stunning scenery? Each additional day on the mountain is $350 per person.
  • Additional porter: If you have more gear than usual, you can request an extra porter at $30 per day.
  • Extra hotel nights in Moshi: Arriving early or staying a bit longer? An extra night in Moshi is $50 per double room or $30 for a single room. Standard check-in is at 11 AM and check-out by 10 AM.
  • Sleeping bag rental: For those who’d rather not pack their own, we offer high-quality sleeping bag rental for $50 per trip.
  • Trekking poles rental: Sturdy telescopic trekking poles are available for rent at $20 per trip.

These options allow you to tailor your journey to fit your preferences and ensure a more comfortable climb—so you can focus on the adventure ahead.

How to Secure Your Spot in a Group or Private Climb

Reserving your place on a Kilimanjaro climb is straightforward:

  • Pay a $300 Deposit: To confirm your place in a group or private climb, a deposit of $300 per person is required. This deposit is non-refundable, but it’s valid for life—so if your plans change (even years down the line), you can apply it to a future trek.
  • Complete Your Payment: The balance of your trip must be paid at least 60 days before your scheduled arrival.

Your initial deposit acts as a “lifetime ticket”—meaning that if you need to postpone due to unforeseen circumstances (such as travel bans or unexpected events), your deposit remains safe and available for whenever you’re ready to travel.

If you have specific dates in mind and would like us to create a new group around your schedule, we’re happy to set this up. We’ll open up your chosen dates to other interested travelers, making it easy for solo climbers or small parties to connect with others. All that’s needed is payment of your individual deposit to get started.

Prefer to keep things private? We also offer private climbs on any day of the year, tailored to your group size—no minimum number required.

Tipping Guidelines on Kilimanjaro

Tipping your crew is an important tradition on Kilimanjaro, and it’s appreciated by everyone who helps make your adventure possible. It’s customary to tip the mountain staff as a group rather than individually. Here’s a general overview of what’s expected:

  • Lead Guide: $15–$20 per day (shared amongst the group)
  • Assistant Guide: $10–$15 per day
  • Chef: $10–$15 per day
  • Porters: $6–$10 per day, per porter

To keep things simple, all climbers in your group usually pool their tips and present them together at the end of the trek. For example, if you’re in a group of five, each person can contribute a portion so that the total matches the recommended amounts above. This ensures your team is thanked in a fair and organized way—no complicated calculations on the mountain necessary!

Additional Costs Not Included

When planning your Kilimanjaro climb, it’s important to be aware of expenses that aren’t covered by the standard package. Here are some of the extra costs you should consider budgeting for:

  • International and domestic flights as well as airport taxes
  • Tanzanian entry visa fees (most nationalities: US $50, U.S. Passport holders: US $100)
  • Tips for your guides, porters, and cook
  • Personal hiking gear and equipment (with rental options available locally)
  • Sleeping bag rental or purchase
  • Insurance for travel and medical emergencies (highly recommended)
  • Any required or recommended vaccinations, such as Yellow Fever (required if arriving from certain countries), and optional ones like Meningitis or Hepatitis A
  • Personal snacks, energy bars, and water purification tablets
  • Prescription medications or any personal pharmacy items
  • Food and beverages not explicitly listed in the itinerary
  • Personal items such as laundry, souvenirs, or non-essential services

By keeping these additional costs in mind, you’ll be able to plan and budget for a smooth and enjoyable Kilimanjaro adventure.

Group Climb Deposit Details

To secure your spot on any of our group Kilimanjaro climbs, simply reserve with a deposit of $300 per person. While this deposit is non-refundable, it remains valid for any future trip with us—so you have full flexibility to postpone or reschedule your adventure should your plans change.

Single Supplement Availability

If you prefer to have your own tent and hotel room during your Kilimanjaro climb, single supplements are available upon request. Simply let us know when you make your booking, and we will arrange private accommodations for you throughout your expedition. This option ensures additional privacy and comfort for solo travelers or anyone wishing for their own space during both the trek and hotel stays.

What Personal Details Are Needed to Join a Kilimanjaro Group Climb?

Before you lace up your boots and set off on your Kilimanjaro adventure, we’ll just need a few key details from you. Please be ready to share the following:

  • Your full name (first and last)
  • A valid email address (for trip updates and communication)
  • Gender
  • Age
  • Nationality

Having this information helps us ensure your registration goes smoothly and your place in the group is confirmed. Rest assured, your details are only used to coordinate your climb and keep you in the loop.

Personal Hiking Gear and Rental Options

When preparing for your Kilimanjaro adventure, it’s essential to have the right personal gear for a safe and comfortable trek. If you don’t want to travel with bulky equipment or are missing some items, don’t worry—many essentials are readily available for rent once you arrive in Tanzania.

Some common gear you may need includes:

  • A quality sleeping bag (you can rent one locally if you prefer to pack light)
  • Trekking poles for added stability on the slopes (also available for rent)
  • Basic trekking apparel such as layered clothing, sturdy boots, headlamp, and a daypack

Rental costs are quite reasonable; for instance, sleeping bags and trekking poles are typically available for a modest fee per trip. This is a convenient option for travelers who’d rather not bring every item all the way from home.

With rentals sorted, you’ll be well equipped to focus on the adventure that awaits—without needing to check an extra suitcase just for gear.

HOW ARE TIPS SHARED AMONG GROUP MEMBERS?

Tips for your Kilimanjaro support crew—guides, cooks, and porters—are generally pooled together rather than handled individually. In group climbs, everyone chips in a fair share, so the total tips can then be properly divided among the entire crew. For instance, if you’re in a group of five, each person would typically contribute a set amount per day for the entire team. This method ensures that everyone who helps along the journey is recognized and rewarded, while also keeping things simple for climbers.

Emergency and Safety Provisions

Safety is always our top priority on Kilimanjaro. Our group expedition packages provide comprehensive emergency support to give you peace of mind as you climb.

  • Helicopter Evacuation: In the event of a serious medical emergency, helicopter evacuation is available through KiliMedAir (please ensure your travel insurance includes coverage for high-altitude rescue up to 6,000 meters).
  • Park Rescue Services: Kilimanjaro National Park rescue team fees are included in your climb, ensuring rapid response capability while on the mountain.
  • Health Monitoring: Your lead guide is equipped with a Pulse Oximeter, and will regularly check each climber’s blood-oxygen saturation twice daily to monitor for signs of altitude sickness.
  • Emergency Oxygen: Supplemental oxygen is brought along for true emergencies, should any climber require assistance due to altitude-related issues (note: it is not used as a general aid for summiting).
  • First Aid Equipment: A basic mountain first aid kit is always on hand, stocked for immediate treatment of injuries or acute illness until rescue teams arrive.

With these measures in place, you can focus on the adventure, knowing your safety is well cared for.

Accommodation Before and After Your Trek

Your Kilimanjaro adventure includes comfortable hotel stays in Moshi (Kilimanjaro Home Of Travelers) both before and after your climb. You’ll enjoy two nights on a bed and breakfast basis, with double occupancy—giving you a relaxing place to unwind and regroup on either side of your mountain journey. These stays provide a convenient launch point for your trek, and a welcome retreat to rest and celebrate your success.

INDICATING YOUR GROUP SIZE

When making your reservation, simply specify the number of people in your climbing party during the booking process. Whether you’re venturing alone, with a partner, or as part of a larger group, just let us know how many climbers will be joining. This helps us arrange the right group and ensure everyone is accounted for on your adventure.

Meals and Dietary Preferences on Kilimanjaro

During your climb, you’ll enjoy three hearty and nutritious meals each day, freshly prepared on the mountain by our experienced cooks. Our menus are tailored to fuel you for trekking and are designed with climbers in mind. We’re happy to accommodate a wide range of dietary needs—including vegetarian, vegan, kosher, and non-vegetarian preferences—so you’ll always have meals that suit your taste and requirements. If you have specific food requests, just let us know in advance, and we’ll make sure you’re well taken care of throughout your journey.

Payment Schedule for Your Climb

After securing your spot with a deposit, the balance for your expedition is due 60 days prior to your scheduled arrival. This ensures everything is arranged for your Kilimanjaro adventure with time to spare for any last-minute preparations.

Travel and Medical Insurance for Kilimanjaro Climbs

While not mandatory, securing comprehensive travel and medical insurance is strongly advised before embarking on your Kilimanjaro adventure. Popular providers like World Nomads, IMG, or Allianz offer coverage that includes high-altitude trekking, trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and evacuation services—essential for peace of mind on the mountain.

We recommend choosing a policy that specifically covers trekking up to 6,000 meters as well as emergency medical evacuation. Double-check your plan’s details to ensure all Kilimanjaro-specific activities are included, so you can focus on the summit rather than the “what-ifs.”

Visa and Health Requirements for Your Kilimanjaro Adventure

Before setting foot on Kilimanjaro, every traveler will need to ensure their documents and immunizations are in order. Most nationalities require a visa to enter Tanzania, which you can typically obtain on arrival—plan for a fee of US$50, though U.S. Passport holders should expect to pay US$100. It’s always wise to check current requirements with your local Tanzanian embassy or consulate before traveling.

As for health, Yellow Fever vaccination is mandatory only if you’re arriving from a country where Yellow Fever is present—otherwise, it’s not required. Vaccinations like Meningitis and Hepatitis A aren’t compulsory, but are strongly recommended to keep your adventure worry-free. Always consult your healthcare provider for personal recommendations, and remember, a little preparation goes a long way when trekking Africa’s highest peak.

Our Lifetime Deposit Policy

We understand that travel plans can change unexpectedly—sometimes by choice, other times due to circumstances beyond your control (pandemics included). That’s why we offer a Lifetime Deposit policy.

Here’s how it works: your initial deposit for a confirmed tour is protected and never lost. If you need to postpone or cancel your trip for any reason, your deposit remains valid—whether you use it in a few months or a few years. There’s no expiration, no fuss. When you’re ready to reschedule, just apply your deposit to any future climb at your convenience. This way, you can plan your adventure with complete peace of mind, knowing your investment is secure, however long your journey takes to begin.
